On October 15, 2007 the “Girls4Life” singing sensation performed in Grandbury for one of Lance Armstrong’s bus tour stops to promote Proposition 15, a Texas Constitutional amendment that will establish Texas as the global leader in cancer research, prevention, early detection and control. This is the official photograph of the “Girls4Life” with Lance Armstrong  taken by Kreutz Photograph. Pictured (l to r) are Savannah Low, Elle Grunwald, Lance Armstrong, Madison Fox, and Sydney Capello, the new Teen Duncanville 2008. Also present at the Grandbury event were Senator Nelson and Representatives Patrick Rose and Kirk Watson. The below link gives you additional information on Lance’s bus tour and Proposition 15. Below the link is Sydney’s letter supporting Proposition 15.

Hi!

My name is Sydney Capello and I am your new Teen Duncanville.

May I have just a few minutes of your time to discuss a topic that means a great deal to me?

LIFE IS FRAGILE! Although my great-grandmother battled breast cancer and survived, my grandmother died of complications from lung cancer and I lost my mom to brain cancer when I was only three years old. Cancer is a devastating disease and the individual battling cancer is not its only victim. Some days are a real struggle for me. When I was younger, every year making a Mother’s Day card or poem was always a class project…But I didn’t have a mom to give it to. I missed never having MY mom be the field trip chaperone or bring the cookies for a class party. This might seem trivial to some, but to a child, it is a big deal. That pain never goes away and will never be forgotten. I don’t want another child to have to go though this. PLEASE HELP MAKE MY DREAM BECOME A REALITY. In 2003, I joined three other girls, with family histories of cancer, to sing for a cure while putting a face to the families of those battling this devastating disease. We became Girls4Life and began partnering with the American Cancer Society, Komen Foundation, LiveStrong, and others, performing for cancer fund-raising events throughout North Texas, from outdoor relays to black tie galas. We recently joined Sen. Nelson in supporting a referendum to establish Texas as the nation’s premier cancer research center. TOGETHER WE CAN FIND A CURE! Please join me in a grassroots movement that will make it happen.

More than 650,000 Texans have a history of cancer. Nearly 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women in Texas will develop cancer during their lifetime. This year, more than 95,000 Texans will be diagnosed with cancer, and more than 37,000 Texans will lose their lives to the disease. Cancer costs Texans $30 billion a year in direct and indirect costs.

Now imagine a world where every man, woman and child has access to the proven screening exams that can detect cancer early and even prevent it. We have made great strides in the fight against cancer, but we cannot lose momentum. Proposition 15 is a constitutional amendment that will create the single largest state-level investment in cancer research, prevention, early detection and control programs in the nation. If approved by voters, the initiative will establish the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas which will be responsible for distributing $300 million in grants for cancer control, prevention and research programs throughout the state each year — starting in 2010 and continuing through 2019. The grants will be made by a non-governmental advisory board made up of respected citizens and a Scientific Review Board. This $3 billion infusion equals a 64% increase of the total amount spent nationally on cancer research. At a time when federal funding for cancer research is being reduced, states must do more to invest in cancer research – and Texas can lead the way. This type of commitment of resources led to the virtual eradication of polio in the 20th century, and it can be successful against cancer in this century. This historic investment will save lives and spur economic growth with the creation of new jobs and the construction of new research facilities and laboratories. The State of Texas can use the equity return on research investments generated by patents, royalties and licenses to repay the bonds. By encouraging grantees to seek matching funds, the initiative will help trigger outside and private sector investment as well. Texas Medicaid costs could decline due to reduced costs for cancer care and treatment of state supported patients.

Texas will be the global leader in the fight to end cancer forever.

PLEASE VOTE FOR PROPOSITION 15.

Early voting: October 22 through November 2. Election Day: Tuesday, November 6, 2007.

Thank You,

Sydney Capello
